George S. Hanzel, M.D., F.A.C.C., serves as Director, Valvular and Congenital Heart Disease program at William Beaumont Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and its subspecialty board of Cardiovascular Disease. A graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C, Dr. Hanzel completed his internship at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, his Residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and then his Cardiology Fellowship back at the National Naval Medical Center. Dr. Hanzel then served in the United States Navy, Lieutenant Commander, as a Staff Cardiologist at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital from 1999 to 2002. He completed an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship in June 2004 at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan where he served as Chief Interventional Cardiology Fellow in his last year.
He was trained in coronary and peripheral (including carotid) intervention, patent foramen ovale and atrial septal defect closure and aortic and mitral valvuloplasty. Active in cardiology research, Dr. Hanzel has written and co-authored numerous abstracts and book chapters. He has a strong research interest in percutaneous aortic valve replacement, percutaneous mitral valve repair, and renal artery stenosis.
Dr. Hanzel is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the American Heart Associations' Council on Clinical Cardiology. He currently serves as the Director of Valvular and Congenital Heart Disease at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.
